Le Thanh Tong Secondary School School year: 2015-2016 REVISION OF THE SECOND SEMESTER – GRADE 9 I Tenses. 1. The present simple tense a. to be: am/ is/ are b. Ordinary verb: (+) S + V(inf.)/ V- s,es. (-) S + do/does + not +V(inf.). (?) Do / Does + S + V(inf.) ? Ex: I go to school everyday. * Adverbs help recognize the present simple tense: adverbs of frequency; every + time 2.The past simple tense. a.to be: was / were b. Ordinary verb: (+) S + V-ed / V( column 2). Ex:What did you do last night? (-) S + didn,t + V( infinitive). I did my homework and watched TV. (?) Did + S + V( infinitive)? *Adverbs help recognize the past simple tense: ago, yesterday, last+ time, in + time, in the past, 3.The present perfect tense. Form: has / have + PP (+) S + has/ have + PP. Ex:Have you ever seen it before? (-) S + has / have + not + PP. No, I haven,t. (?) Has / Have + S + PP ? * Adverbs help us recognize the present perfect tense: since + Mốc thời gian, for + khoảng thời gian, so far, recently, lately, already, yet, up to now, the first time, many / several times before 4. The present progressive tense Form: am/ is/ are + V-ing (+) S + am/ is/ are +V- ing. Ex: What are you doing,Lan? (-) S + am/ is/ are + not +V- ing. I am reading newspapers. (?) Am/ Is/ Are + S + V- ing? *Adverbs help recognize the present continuous tense: now, at present, at the moment, today, tonight 5. The past progressive tense * Form: was/ were + V-ing (+) S + was/were +V- ing. (-) S + was/were + not +V- ing (?) Was/ Were + S + V- ing? * Usages: - Express an action happening at a point of time in the past. Ex: He was playing soccer at 5 o,clock yesterday afternoon. - An action was happening in the past which has interrupted by another action. Ex: They were having dinner when I came . - Two or more actions that were in progress at the same time Ex: I was watching TV while my brother was playing games. *Clause ( V Past progressive) +When + Clause (V past simple ) *Clause ( V Past progressive) +While + Clause (V past Progressive) 6. The future simple tense. *Form: will + V(inf) (+) S + will+ V(inf.). Ex: She will have a test next week. (-) S + won,t + V( infinitive). (?) Will + S + V( infinitive)? Adjectives and adverbs: * Form: adjective + “ – LY” adverb of manner Ex: slow - slowly, quick – quickly, beautiful – beautifully * Notes: good – well, hard – hard, late – late, fast – fast, early - early She is good at speaking English. She speaks English well. VI. Adjectives + that clause: *Form: S + be + adjective + that clause. Ex1: I’m excited that I can go to Da Lat this time. VII. Make suggestions: a/ suggest + V-ing Ex: I suggest collecting unused clothes. b/suggest( that) S + should + V(inf.) .Ex: I suggest that you should speak English in class. c/ Why don,t we + infinitive? Ex: Why don,t we stay at home? d/ Shall we/ Let,s + infinitive Ex: Let,s stay at home. e/ What/ How about + V.ing? Ex: What about staying at home? VIII. Relative pronouns: Who, Which, that *Which:( is used for things) *Who: ( is used for people) *That: ( is used for both people and things) Ex: Auld Lang Syne is a song which is sung on New Year’s Eve. Ex: Hong is the girl who is giving a present to her mom. Ex: The chair that I bought yesterday is broken. IX. Connectives: and, but, or, so, because, therefore, however, moreover, meanwhile, *Usage: Connectives are used to combine words , phrases of words or sentences. Ex: We play the piano and read comics in our free time. X. Phrasal verbs: look after, look at, look up, look for, turn on, turn off, go on, get on, XI. Modal verbs: may, might Form: S + may/ might + V(inf.) Use: May/ Might is used to talk about present or future possibility. Might is a little less certain than May. Ex: It may be a box of crayons. There might be water in Mars. XII. Conditional sentences: Type If-clause Main-clause 1 Simple present Simple future 2 Simple past Would/could/might+V (bare-inf.) Ex: If It rains this afternoon, we won’t go to school. ( real in the present or future) He would travel around the world if he were rich. ( unreal in the present) * If not = unless (trừ phi) Ex: If it doesn,t rain, rice will not grow. Unless it rains, rice will not grow. XIII. PRONUNCIATION. 1. How to pronounce plural nouns or the form of the verbs after the third personal pronouns. (s; es) Eg : washes, boxes, looks, stays - After consonants: k, p, t “s” is read /s/ (Sau các phụ âm k, p, t “s” đọc là /s/) - After the lefts “s” is read /z/ (Sau các trường hợp còn lại “s” đọc là /z/) - After consonants: sh, ch, ss, x “-es” is read /iz/ ( Sau các phụ âm sh, ch, ss, x “ es” đọc là iz) 2. How to pronounce suffix “-ed” after regular verbs.
